ఆత్మగౌరవం కోసం, సామాజిక న్యాయం కోసం ఉద్యమించిన ఒక  గొప్ప పోరాట యోధుడు పెరియార్‌ ఇ.వి. రామస్వామి నాయకర్‌ (ఈ రోడ్‌ వెంకటప్ప రామస్వామి). ఈ అంశాలపై ఆయన అనేక రచనలు చేశారు. వాటిలో జెండర్‌, కుల అసమానతల వంటి సమస్యలను ప్రత్యేకంగా చర్చించారు. తమిళనాడులో అన్నాదురై, కరుణానిధి, ఎం.జి. రామచంద్రన్‌ వంటి ప్రముఖ నాయకులకు రాజకీయంగా జన్మనిచ్చిన ద్రవిడ కజగం (డికె) పార్టీ వ్యవసాపకులు పెరియారే. తన సమకాలికుడైన బి.ఆర్‌.అంబేడ్కర్‌ ఇవే అంశాలపై రాసిన రచనల లాగా పెరియార్‌ రచనలు భారతదేశమంతటా వ్యాప్తి చెందలేదు. ఎందుకంటే ఆయన ఇంగ్లీష్‌లో కాకుండా కేవలం తమిళంలోనే రాసేవారు, తమిళంలోనే మాట్లాడేవారు.

బ్రాహ్మణీయ ఆధిపత్యం మీదా జెండర్‌, కుల అసమానతల వంటి సమస్యల మీదా ఆయన చేసిన సంచలనాత్మక రచనలకు ఆయన చనిపోయి అరవశతాబ్ధి గడచిన తరువాత కూడా ఇప్పటికీ ఎంతో ప్రాసంగికత వుంది. మన ఆలోచనలను విప్లవీకరించే నాలుగు పెరియార్‌ మౌలిక రచనలను మేం ఇందులో పొందుపరుస్తున్నాం.

Periyar (Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy) was a crusader for self-respect and social justice and wrote extensively on these issues, touching specifically on gender and caste.  He was an indefatigable activist, founding the Dravida Kazhagam that gave rise to leaders like Annadurai, Karunanidhi and MGR. But unlike his contemporary B.R.Ambedkar who also wrote on these issues, Periyar’s works did not spread immediately over India because he did not write in English and instead spoke and wrote in Tamil. His path-breaking works on Brahminical dominance and gender and caste inequality stand valid half a century after he died. We present here four of his seminal essays that radicalise our thinking.
