Representing the diverse multi-culture of Odisha, this short story anthology captures the vast world of Odia literature, beginning with its first "pearl"—the 1898 story "Rebati"—and extending to the adventurous voices of the modern present.
While "Rebati," written by the pioneer of Odia literature, Fakir Mohan Senapati, emphasized the necessity of women's education in the traditional society of that time, Gopinath Mohanty's story "Forget Our Names" (centered on a person suddenly engulfed by amnesia) illustrates how fragile the links are in the weaving of identities and human relationships. Gayatri Saraf's stories, "Butterfly" and "Madhuchaya," unfold the many colors and dimensions of betrayal—be it a wife who deceives a loving husband in one story, or a son who betrays the trust of his elderly parents in another. Gourahari Das's story, "This Land Used to be Like Heaven," reflects an "intimate" longing for a vanished world and mirrors an innocent, natural landscape that had not yet been commercialized.
By the time these stories conclude, they remind the readers of our common human heritage.
