యాత్ర అంటే ఏమిటి? ప్రాంతాలను మాత్రమే సందర్శిస్తే అది సంపూర్ణ యాత్ర అవుతుందా? ప్రాంతాలతో పాటు అక్కడి మనుషులను చూసి, కలిసి, వారి కథలను విని వారితో ముచ్చటిస్తేనే ఆ యాత్ర సంపూర్ణంగా సార్థకమవుతుంది. దీనినే ఇంగ్లీష్ లో "Maps and Chaps" లేదా "Places and People" అంటారు. నాకు తెలిసిన మేరకు యాత్రా సాహిత్యాన్ని రచించిన వి. ఎస్. నైపాల్, విలియం డార్లింపుల్, విక్రమ్ సేతు ప్రాంతాలు, ప్రజలు, చరిత్ర, రాజకీయ, సాంఘీక పరిస్థితులను పరిశీలిస్తూ ఈ కర్తవ్యాన్ని జయప్రదంగా నిర్వహించారు. తెలుగులో వస్తున్న యాత్ర సాహిత్యం (Travelogues) ఆ స్థాయిని అందుకోవాలని నా అభిలాష.

What does a journey truly mean? If one merely visits places, can it be called a complete journey? A journey becomes truly meaningful only when one engages with the people of those places—meets them, spends time with them, listens to their stories, and converses with them. This is what is referred to in English as “Maps and Chaps” or “Places and People.”
To the best of my knowledge, travel writers such as V. S. Naipaul, William Dalrymple, and Vikram Seth have successfully fulfilled this responsibility by closely observing places, people, history, and the political and social conditions surrounding them. It is my hope that Telugu travel writing (travelogues) will one day rise to that same level.
