Since the sudras were regarded as the labouring class, parrticular attention has been paid to the investigation of their material conditions and their economic and social relations with the members of the higher varnas. The untouchables are also theoretically placed in the category of sudras and hence their origin and position has also been discussed in some detail. \nR.S.Sharma (1919-2011) was an eminent historian and academic of Ancient and early Medieval India. He taught at Patna University and Delhi University. He was the founding Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and a historian of international repute.
